Baccarat Variations
Baccarat has a few variations, on this page we look at the differences
between the most popular versions of baccarat.
European baccarat, baccarat en banque and chemin de fer
all originate from the Italian game baccarat which means zero
referring to the value of the tens and face cards. When baccarat
made its way into France it became an exclusive game of the
French nobility who where known not to frequent public casinos.
European Baccarat
The dealer operates as the bank for the casino and the banks standing
and drawing are completely optional. The player on the
other hand may stand or draw on five as he pleases. The
rules of play is similar to that of American baccarat. The
casinos charge a 5% commission on all winning bank bets.
Baccarat en Banque
This variation allows for two player hands and a bank hand, a
casino employee. Players are allowed to bet on either
player hand but never on the bank hand. The banker can
stand or draw as he pleases. The banker usually plays
according to the American variation of the game but he can
change this method of play if it betters his chance of winning.
Chemin de Fer
Chemin de Fer is French for railroad which also refers to the
shoe moving from player to player around the table like a train.
The difference between is that the bank rotates amongst the
players. The bank takes a commission from the winnings of
each banker. The acting banker cannot draw down on any of
his original bank or subsequent winnings unless either the
players do not subscribe to the bank or after the completion of
the bank the banker chooses to pass the bank. Players can
stand or draw on 5 but the bankers play is completely optional.
American Baccarat
The modern version of Baccarat played in casinos in the US is a
combination of two variation of the game, European Baccarat and
chemin de fer. The American version combines the best
features of the afore mentioned Baccarat variations. This
variation originated in South America under the name punto
banco, Tommy Renzoni introduced it into the United States in
the late 1950s after the Castro government closed all the
casinos in Cuba. The American version is not only played
in the Americas but all over the world.
In the American variation all players can bet on the banker or
player hand, the shoe rotates amongst the players who take turns
playing the banker hand, all wagers are covered by the casino
and the bank is relatively unlimited (usually subject to a
maximum bet size).
