Blackjack Glossary

BLACKJACK: A hand consisting of an Ave and a 10 value card (10, Jack, Queen or King), card value totals 21 and pays 3 to 2.
BROKE:  Going over 21 while drawing additional cards to your initial hand.
BUST: Going over 21 while drawing additional cards to your initial hand.
HARD DRAW: A hand with no Aces is called a "hard hand" due to the player being able to bust on the next hit.
HIT: A card dealt by the dealer to get you closer to 21 without going over.
DRAW: A card dealt by the dealer to get you closer to 21 without going over.
HOLE CARD:  Dealers face down card.
INSURANCE: May be taken when the dealers up-card is an Ace, usually half of your initial wager to protect you against the dealers Blackjack.  Pays 2 to 1 but you still lose your initial wager.
NATURAL: Blackjack dealt with the initial cards, an Ace and a face card.
PUSH: Player and dealer tie.  No money is lost.
SOFT DRAW: A hand containing an Ace, the Ace can be valued at 11 or 1.  i.e.  An Ace and a 5 will give you a  soft 16.
STAND:  When a player is satisfied with his hand and no longer wants any more cards, he stands.
STIFF:  A hand that can go bust by adding more cards.  A hand of a hard 12-16 combination is a stiff.
SURRENDER: Some casinos will allow a player to forfeit half their original wager if the player thinks her hand will not beat the dealer.
UPCARD: The face up card of the dealer's initial two cards.
